to be held at Bentley Priory between Thursday, 10th and Sunday, 13th September 2009
Invitation to members of the Association to participate
The Royal Observer Corps Association is very privileged to have been invited to set up a display at Bentley Priory as part of English Heritage’s “Heritage Open Days” to be held between Thursday, 10th and Sunday, 13th September inclusive. Last year about 5,000 people attended the event so it is very popular.
Thursday, 10th is designated as ‘Veterans Day’ (we are all welcome) and tours of the Priory will take place throughout the day. Tours will take place again on Friday with Saturday and Sunday seeing the Priory take on a 1940’s feel with period re-enactments by enthusiasts and other 1940’s scenarios taking place. The Priory is open from 10.00 to 17.00, refreshments can be purchased. No charge is made for entry but a donation to the Trust of £1 if a tour of the Priory is taken will be appreciated.
We do hope that many ex-ROC members will visit what is our ‘spiritual home’ as our Headquarters and NRC09 were there for so many years. National Committee has been greatly assisted in mounting the display by Simon Crane who has a small ROC Museum at the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum at Doncaster’s Lakeside and which is to be officially opened on Sunday, 2nd August at mid-day.
We would be grateful for help from ex-members of the Corps with manning the display which will be a professional portrayal of the Corps from the 1940’s up until Stand-down. However, we need to know names of those willing to help because name badges will be prepared, also the day on which you intend to attend and the time you could donate to us. If possible we would like to make things more realistic by wearing uniform (if it still fits!), a woolly pullover with blue shirt/black tie, a Post coverall or a blazer. From replies a manning rota will be drawn up and each individual contacted before the event with final details.
Unfortunately no expenses can be claimed for helping with the display !!
The address for your SatNav is: Bentley Priory, Stanmore, Middlesex, HA7 3HH.
Even if you do not wish to help with talking to the public, we do hope you will be able to attend on one of the days – but if you are able to help with manning please contact Edwina Holden either at: firstname.lastname@example.org ; by telephone 01438 831039 or post to: Heath Farm, Breachwood Green, Hitchin, SG4 8PJ giving the following details:
Christian, Surname and Group to appear on the badge.
Your email or postal address.
Day of visit and time prepared to donate to the Stand.
Your reply by Thursday, 3rd September if possible would be appreciated please.
Details of the Trust can be found by tapping ‘The Bentley Priory Battle’ into your search engine. It is also interesting on the web site to see companies offered team-building training seemingly based on looking into the early years of the ROC!
Please be aware of our three ROC pieces on the Bentley Priory Battle of Britain Trust web site.
