Hi there,

I have stumbled upon your email address on the website www.rocassoc.org.uk/.
I am looking at restoring a post in Devon, and I am very interested to get in touch with members of 10 group to gather some information.
I am also looking for Cluster Maps of Devon and Cornwall - are these available? It would be very interesting to know which posts were in each cluster local to me!

Would it be possible for you to put me in contact with the right person with reference to 10 Group?

Many thanks,
Rob Jones

I would like to use the Royal Observer Corps in Cornwall as a case study. I have tried to get in touch via email with Laurence H... via the Truro ROCA, but am yet to receive a reply. Do you have a more current email address for him?

Thanks you,

Dear Roy

Mark Russell from ROC Remembered recommended I contact you. I am working for a television production company called Impossible Pictures. We have been commissioned by Channel 4 to make a series about The Second World War, with particular emphasis being on the Blitz.

I am currently looking for people from all over the country who lived during this time and worked for the Royal Observer Corp to share their experiences with me initially over the phone and then potentially on camera.

The series is set to be an exciting and interesting look at the Second World War. However each programme really needs a human voice, first hand accounts from people who lived during this time and contributed to the war effort.

I'm wondering whether you're in touch with anyone who belonged to the Royal Observer Corp during WW2 and may be interested in sharing their experiences with me? If so it would be great to have your help on this. I’m also looking for any monitoring posts potentially to include in our filming. Any advice you can give would be much appreciated.

If there is any further information you require please do get in touch, for background information on Impossible Pictures please go to www.impossiblepictures.co.uk  .

Best wishes

I am a student at the University of Plymouth studying photography. I am very interested in doing a project on ROC nuclear bunkers and the people who used to work in them. I previously did a smaller project on the ROC bunkers but I would like to pursue it a lot further as I find them fascinating. I have seen on your site that there are local groups. I was wondering if you could help me with putting me into contact with anyone relevant.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Subject: Researching my Grandfather
From: Paul B...

To: r.mcd...

I am researching my Grandfather, Fred Butler, who lived in Wisbech. He was born in 1900 and was too young for WW1 and served as an Air Raid Warden during the WW2.

I was of the understanding that Air Wardens were, in fact, properly called Royal Observer Corp members.

Like all of us I did not understand enough when I was younger to ask my Grandfather of his heritage. I am now trying to find out more and when I came across your link "ROC Personal Service Records" I thought maybe I was now in the right direction.

I have 2 main questions, 1) Am I in the right area, and 2) Am I allowed to search the records for any reference of him.

Hoping, in advance, that you can help.
Best Regards
Paul B...

My name is Rosalind – born 1950 – I am the daughter of Donald John Ellis who served in the Royal Observer Corps during the second world war – I would be very interested for any information that I can get on his service record. He would have served somewhere in Kent – but I can remember him saying something about them being bombed – but they managed to save the cat!!!! In the end, as they lived near Biggen Hill, their home was bomb damaged and they had to be evacuated and went to live with my great Uncle in Linconshire (I think).

I now live in New Zealand, but grew up in England with my Mother, Father (who passed away around 1961) and Paternal Grandmother.

I would very much appreciate your assistance in how I can become a member so that I can access his service record. He had a bad curvature of the spine, so could not serve in the regular Army.

Good morning,

I am researching the history of my Uncle Flt Sgt DE Green RAFVR

He was the pilot of a Lockheed Hudson which crashed into Ben Lui in Scotland on 15/4/1941

I am trying to find records (if there are any) from the Listening Post at Crianlarich which I believe heard the aircraft, and then reported it as crashed to the local constabulary.

I think Crianlarich came under 33 Group which had its HQ at Ardmaddy Castle RAF Oban.

I would be very interested if you could give me any information in this regard.

Best Regards

I have purchased and am starting to restore Machynlleth ROC post in wales http://www.machynlleth.puffinpost.com/machroc2.php I am also a radio amateur and in September will be operating a special event station from the Machynlleth post contacting other amateurs worldwide throughout the month using a special callsign GB0ROC.

I hope this may be of interest to your members. I will send you more details if you like and a QSL card when they are printed.

I was a Woman Observer at Bromley from Dec.1943 until standdown on Sat.12th May 1945. I was then Gwendoline Parker and enjoyed my time there with my friend Christina Harrod, who is still alive but unfortunately has lost her memory. While there we had a few WAAFS working with us. How do I register with the association?

Dear Sir

I would like to ask 2 questions if I may regarding the ROC.

Is it possible to establish service details for an ex ROC member? My father Donald William Smith is pushing on the years now, but has mentioned that he served with the ROC for a "while" during the 70's in Inverness, after he had served as a fireman at Inverness Airport. Is it possible to find such records and get a service number etc?

I myself am an ex servicemen and recently got my Veterans badge, I would like to know if former members of the ROC are entitled to the badge, as i'd like to try to apply for one for my father.

Many thanks for your time
